“9 Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, 10 and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. 11 And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank”. Exodus 24: 9-11

The meal that the leadership and the elders of Israel had on the mountain is a beautiful, mysterious and awe inspiring event. After sacrifices for sin, they saw God and did not die. What did the elders see? The description of sapphire under God’s feet, indicates that they did not see more than His feet. They had bowed their heads in awe. Sapphire is a deep colour blue. It is the colour of the heavens. It points at God being enthroned above the heavens. What is not told, is not for us to speculate about. But what is told is that God and man can be together and have a meal and man live. That is what the Lord’s Supper shows us. God, in Christ sits with us at the same

What happened on that mountain pointed at things to come. And such we find in Hebrews 12: “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal
gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.”
