A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34- 35

The newness of the commandment is given in the appearance of the Lord Jesus in the flesh. The Lord Jesus teaches His disciples, and us, two things. 1) to follow His example of unconditional love and 2) to example His love to all people. The way in which this happens is as follows: we are loved by Christ, we love as Christ, we show Christ in our love to all people. The problem is not so much in the loving, as it is in the people we are to love. As Christ loved unlovable people, so we are to love unlovable people. So that the power of love may be displayed to other unlovable people. This is not about loving your friends, but about loving one’s enemies. That leads to this thought. We must plumb the depth of our own unlovableness and our being loved unconditionally anyway by Christ. That will empower us to love unconditionally. That is a good reason to come to church to experience the love of Christ.
